Concord Mariner SG

Concord Mariner SG

The Concord Mariner SG is one of the most underrated design pieces of the 1980s. When Concord launched the Mariner line in 1980, the inspiration was obvious: The faceted bezel and integrated metal bracelet unmistakably echoed the design language of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus – interpreting it in an unconventional black and gold aesthetic typical of the extravagant design style of that decade. The “SG” stands for the Sport Gold variant, and this example shows probably the most dramatic color combination of the series: a fully black PVD-coated stainless steel case with integrated bracelet, contrasted by a faceted 18-carat yellow gold bezel and gold accents on the bracelet. The black dial with its striking diagonal gold stripes, gold dot indices, and arrow-shaped gold hands has an almost jewelry-like, graphic quality that shifts between Art Deco and the glamour of the 1980s.

This example is in an honest vintage condition that must be communicated transparently: The black PVD coating on the case and bracelet shows visible signs of wear in the form of abrasion and chipping on edges and bracelet links – a common occurrence in PVD-coated watches of this age, as the coating over the decades releases the underlying base metal in stressed areas. The 18K gold bezel shows light scratches but is overall well preserved. The dial is clean with intact printing and stripe decoration. The date window at 3 o’clock functions perfectly. The case back bears the engraving “Mariner SG,” the reference numbers, and “Water-Resistant.” The Concord-signed folding clasp with the golden “C” logo closes securely.
