Eterna is one of the great Swiss watch brands to which the world of watches owes genuine milestones—above all, the invention of the ball-bearing rotor in 1948. This revolutionary construction still adorns the brand’s five-ball emblem today and is used in virtually every modern automatic watch. This “Executive Quartz 4000” dates from the early 1980s and showcases another, equally fascinating side of Eterna: the transition of the traditional manufacture into the quartz era, with movements that were among the most precise of their time. The “4000” in the model designation refers to Eterna’s highly specified quartz movement family, which was regarded as particularly durable.

The compact, cushion-shaped case, measuring 32 x 32 mm across, is gold-plated and features the soft, organic lines of the late 1970s and early 1980s. On the wrist, the watch wears wonderfully flat and discreetly—it has a genuine dress-watch character. The deep-black dial creates a powerful contrast with the applied gold baton indices and displays Eterna’s distinctive five-ball logo at 12 o’clock—that iconic signature which remains an important identifying feature for collectors today.
