There are watches that show the time. And then there are watches that question the concept of time. The Exaequo Softwatch belongs to the second category. Inspired by Salvador Dalí’s iconic 1931 painting "The Persistence of Memory," the Geneva manufacturer Exaequo translated the melting watches of the surrealism master into a wearable object in the 1990s, which has since achieved cult status. The piece was sold in Dalí museums, galleries, and exhibitions before Exaequo had to close its doors in the late 1990s due to licensing disputes – a circumstance that makes the Softwatch even more desirable today.

The gold-plated case flows over the wrist in an organic, asymmetrical shape, as if melting under the weight of time. The offset ball crown blends seamlessly into the sculptural silhouette. Under the mineral glass, the white dial with distorted black Roman numerals precisely follows the wavy case shape, creating the surrealistic effect that makes this watch a conversation starter. Two slender hands – nothing more is needed, because with a Softwatch it’s less about reading the time and more about questioning it.

Collectors inevitably draw parallels to the legendary Cartier Crash, which follows a similar design principle but remains unattainable at a fraction of the price. The Softwatch offers the same visual punch, the same wrist presence, and the same wow factor – as a standalone work of art on the wrist.

This example is in very good condition. The case and gold plating are intact and free of significant signs of wear, the dial is flawless. The original green crocodile leather strap is broken at the clasp and the longer strap part due to age and is supplied in its original condition. A strap change is easily possible due to the special strap attachment. The gold-plated pin buckle in a matching organic shape is also original and functional. The case back bears the engraving "Softwatch by Exaequo".
