Zenith S.58 Mark I
Zenith S.58 Mark I
At the end of the 1950s, when functional wristwatches for sports, outdoor activities and use in the harshest conditions were increasingly in demand, Zenith launched the S.58 onto the market. The ‘S’ presumably stands for “Scaphandrier” - the French word for professional diver - and the ‘58’ refers to the year of its market launch. Originally intended for the Italian market, the watch is also said to have been worn by military units such as the Marina Militare - in other words, a genuine operational watch long before ‘tool watch’ became a buzzword.
This early version of the S.58 - also known as the Mark I - embodies exactly what many modern watches lack: Understatement with attitude. No embellishments, no rotating bezel, no frills - just what you really need. The clearly designed dial with Arabic numerals, broad luminous hands and honest patina is both functional and charming. The whole thing is powered by the tried-and-tested hand-wound Zenith Calibre 120 movement, which has always been appreciated for its longevity.
With its pleasantly wearable format, robust case and curved Plexiglas, the S.58 is a watch that is not loud - but has a lot to say. A watch for true enthusiasts who value history, technology and authenticity.
